MT HOOD

We circled the Backside to get to Hood River, 26 to 35.

The slopes were clear and drop offs, blue ice in the notches.

The Backside gave way to orchards, peaches, cherries.

In Hood River the kite boarders were out.

The Columbia is big.

SINDWINDING

Straight lines are so overrated.

To go north, we first turned a bit south, mostly east. Grisham then Sandy toward Government Camp but we were yawning every 90 seconds so stopped at Tollgate Campground.

Site 3 was next to the Zigzag River. The tent pitched below a little canyon edge.

On sleeping bags we lay in the sun, read, slept, ate chips lazily.

Mac and cheese was the perfect meal.

SINDWINDER BLOG POST #13.9: LIGHT

Cape Blanco Lighthouse

The lighthouse could be seen for 23 nautical miles.

The first keeper lived there 38 years, the next 42.

The road was steep from campground to beach. Flashlights. A sliver of moon.

The camp hosts were friendly, though they had no change.

Firewood was $5 a bundle and we got some.

Showers for free. Water spigots in each sight.

Along the Umpqua River

Highway 101 to 38 from Reedport to 99, which we were on but never found a sign for, to 5 to Portland, 405 then Lincoln, downtown. To review:

Sticky buns in Coos Bay, quiche and nutella brownie. Log trucks.

The tide was out. Seagull, raptors waiting for those stranded in a tide pools.

Log ships, almost full, would have to wait for high tide.

The railroad bridge turns sideways, makes room for exiting ships.

Thank you COPPERFIELDS, in Healdsburg! Thank you Claire and Ed Burdett for housing us in style and introducing us to the town! Great to meet you Maureen and Family, Gloria, and the lunch gals.

On the way north....some highlights:
Confusion Mountain, paint (all colors) splattered all over the highway (a spray paint truck disaster?), Redwoods, Wonder Stump Road, Pistol River, Sneaker Wave Warners on
Meyer's Beach, sand flies, big rocks, Humbug Mountain, Rogue River, wretched RV restrooms, Shutter Creek Correctional Institution, Orick, Reedsville, Drain.
